What we treat

Recovery after a stroke

The work after a stroke is slow and it is worth doing. We treat patients on the wards at Chong Hua and carry on with them in the clinic.

A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted. The part of the body that section of the brain controlled stops working properly — most often one side, an arm or a leg or both.

The brain can learn to do the same job along a different route. That is what rehabilitation is: repeated, guided practice that gives it the chance to.

What we do

What treatment involves

A rehabilitation doctor plans it before anything starts. Nothing is decided before somebody has looked at you.

Treatment starts with what you can and cannot do now: whether you can climb your stairs, hold a cup, sleep through the night. That is what the programme is aimed at, not a number on a chart.

Physical therapy for walking, standing and balance. Occupational therapy for the tasks a day is actually made of. Speech therapy where speaking or swallowing is affected.

If getting to the clinic is difficult, our therapists can come to you.

How long will it take? It depends on what the doctor finds, and they will tell you at your first visit rather than guess before seeing you.

Equipment

What we may use

Equipment most clinics in Cebu do not have. Which of it applies to you is the doctor's decision, not something you need to work out.

  • Super Inductive System (SIS)

A strong magnetic field that reaches deeper than ordinary electrical treatment. Nothing touches your skin. It eases pain, wakes up weak muscles, and helps broken bones heal.
  • Walking trainer

A treadmill that holds part of your weight, so you can practise walking safely before your legs can carry you. Standard after a stroke.
  • Swallowing therapy (Vitalstim)

Small electrical pulses that help the swallowing muscles work again — common after a stroke.

Come and be looked at.

Ring and describe it in your own words. We will tell you honestly whether we can help — and if we are not the right people, we will say so.

Using an HMO? See the providers we bill directly — bring your Letter of Authorisation and we will do the paperwork.
